We evaluated this Fotrend Fishing Tool Set, which aims to be a complete, all-in-one kit for anglers targeting bass and other freshwater species. It includes a total of six essential items, focusing on durability and utility.
At this price point, the kit is a very good value. The tools are generally of good quality and focus well on the starting-to-mid-range market. We give this set 4 out of 5 stars.
Analysis: Pliers, Scissors, and Build Quality
Pliers and Line Cutting: The highlight of the kit is the pliers, which are a good size for handling bass or trout. They are constructed from lightweight aluminum with what looks to be hardened inserts in the jaws. The side clippers are a nice feature and cut line easily. The braid scissors were also good and worked well on braid. It is also nice that most of the tools come with a lanyard to prevent being lost, and the pliers specifically come with a nice belt holster for quick access.
Lip Grippers: The fish grippers are made of a plastic-like material. While they felt robust upon inspection, we are not clear on how long they will last compared to metal alternatives.
Analysis: The Fillet Knife
The 9-inch fillet knife seems well constructed and was sharp upon arrival, though not in a finely honed shape. The blade is coated with a black material, and it is hard to tell how long this coating will last.
Size Mismatch: Our only significant complaint about the knife is its size. The 9” fillet blade is very long and feels disproportionate to the rest of the items in the kit, which are better suited for freshwater/smaller species. We think a 7” or even 6” blade would have been a better matched for this overall tool kit.
Technical Detail: Tool Function
The Fishing Pliers are essential for hook removal and splitting rings. The Fillet Knife is designed for processing the catch. The Fish Lip Gripper allows the angler to secure the fish without touching it, preventing injury to both the fish and the user.
Conclusion and Final Recommendation
This is a great kit to get someone started or refreshed on their fishing tools. The aluminum pliers and effective line-cutting scissors offer excellent utility and good value for the price.
We are deducting one star: Minus one star because the included fillet knife is disproportionately long (9”) and feels like a size mismatch for the rest of the kit, and for the minor durability question surrounding the plastic-like material of the fish grippers.
Overall, this kit provides a good foundation of quality tools and is a very good value.
